Ladera Health Map (the “Site,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) is an independent, volunteer, resident-run community information project about Ladera Ranch, California, and the health concerns some residents have raised. The Site is operated by its organizers (the “Operator”). By using the Site you agree to the Disclaimer, Terms of Use, and Privacy Policy below. If you do not agree, please do not use the Site.
Disclaimer
Not medical advice
The Site does not provide medical, health, or professional advice, diagnosis, or treatment, and is not a substitute for care from a qualified professional. Never disregard or delay seeking medical advice because of something you read here. If you think you may have a medical emergency, call 911 or your local emergency number immediately.
Self-reported and unverified
Map entries, comments, and other user submissions are self-reported by members of the public. They are not verified, fact-checked, or confirmed by us or by any medical or government authority. They may be incomplete, mistaken, out of date, or false. A greater number of reports in one area usually reflects that more people chose to report there — not that any illness is proven to occur more often there.
No cluster and no cause is established here
The Site cannot and does not establish the existence of a “cancer cluster” or any other disease cluster, and it does not establish that anything caused any illness. Only a public health agency, working from official cancer-registry data and the full underlying population, can evaluate whether a cluster exists. Reference points shown on the map (such as golf courses, turf areas, utilities, or towers) are provided as neighborhood context only and are not identified, and should not be read, as causes of any illness.
Not affiliated; not endorsed
The Site is independent. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or speaking for any homeowners association, the County of Orange, the State of California, any government or health agency, any news organization, or any named business, group, or property owner. References and links to outside organizations are for information only and are not endorsements.
Terms of Use
1. Who may use the Site
You must be at least 18 years old to submit content. If you are under 18, you may use the Site only with the involvement and consent of a parent or legal guardian. By submitting content you confirm you meet this requirement.
2. Your content and conduct
You are solely responsible for anything you submit (map reports, comments, email sign-ups, and any other content). By submitting content, you grant the Site a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free license to display, store, and share that content in connection with operating the Site. You keep whatever rights you already had in your content.
When you submit content, you represent that, to the best of your knowledge, it is truthful, that you have the right to submit it, and that it does not violate these Terms or any law.
You also agree not to:
- post content that is false, misleading, defamatory, harassing, threatening, hateful, or invasive of someone’s privacy;
- post another person’s private health information, or identify a specific individual’s illness, without that person’s (or their guardian’s) consent;
- post an exact home address, or information intended to identify where a specific person or family lives;
- impersonate anyone, or misrepresent your affiliation with any person or organization;
- submit spam, advertising, or automated/bulk submissions, or attempt to scrape, overload, hack, or disrupt the Site;
- use the Site for any unlawful purpose.
3. Moderation
We may review, edit for length or clarity, refuse, remove, or restrict any content at any time, with or without notice, at our discretion — in particular content that names or targets a specific party as a cause of illness, or that otherwise violates these Terms. We are not obligated to monitor content, and removing some content does not create a duty to remove all of it. Moderation decisions do not make us the author of, or responsible for, content submitted by others.
4. User content is the user’s
The Site is an interactive computer service that hosts content provided by third parties. Content submitted by users reflects the views of those users, not of the Operator. Consistent with Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act (47 U.S.C. § 230), the Operator is not the publisher or speaker of information provided by another content provider.
5. Copyright and takedowns
We respect intellectual property. We link to outside news and sources rather than republishing them. If you believe content on the Site infringes your copyright, email admin@laderahealthmap.com with a description of the work, the location of the material on the Site, your contact information, and a statement of good-faith belief that the use is unauthorized. We will respond to valid notices, including by removing infringing material.
6. No warranty
The Site and everything on it are provided “as is” and “as available,” without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including accuracy, completeness, reliability, fitness for a particular purpose, or non-infringement. We do not warrant that the Site will be uninterrupted, secure, or error-free.
7. Limitation of liability
To the fullest extent permitted by law, the Operator and its organizers and volunteers will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or any loss arising from your use of (or inability to use) the Site or from any content on it. Some jurisdictions do not allow certain limitations, so parts of this section may not apply to you.
8. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless the Operator and its organizers and volunteers from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable attorneys’ fees) arising out of content you submit or your violation of these Terms or of any law or the rights of a third party.
9. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of California, without regard to conflict-of-law rules. You agree that any dispute will be resolved in the state or federal courts located in Orange County, California, and you consent to that jurisdiction. Before filing anything, please contact us first so we can try to resolve the issue informally.
10. Changes
We may update these Terms from time to time. Material changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above. Your continued use of the Site after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
Privacy Policy
What is public vs. private
- Public: map reports (an approximate area, a category, and any optional details or note you add) and comments (the name or handle you enter and your comment text). Assume anyone can see these.
- Private: email addresses you provide when signing up for updates. These are not displayed on the Site.
What we collect
- Map reports — the approximate location you tap (an area, not an exact address), the category, and optional fields you choose to fill in (such as a general age range, years, or a short note.)
- Comments — the name/handle and text you submit.
- Email sign-ups — your email address and the date you signed up.
- Limited technical data — when you submit a report, comment, or sign-up, we store the submission’s IP address to help prevent spam and abuse and to moderate. For the simple visitor counter, we store only a one-way, salted hash of the IP address and the date — not the raw IP — so we can count roughly how many people visit without tracking individuals.
- Your language choice is stored in your own browser (local storage) so the Site remembers it. This is not used to track you and is not sent to us as an identifier.
What we do not do
We do not sell your personal information. We do not use advertising trackers or third-party advertising cookies. We do not build marketing profiles.
How we use what we collect
To display community reports and comments; to send update emails to people who ask for them; to prevent spam and abuse; to moderate content; and to keep the Site running. We may share information only in these limited situations: in aggregate or de-identified form (for example, a total visitor count); when required by law or valid legal process; or to protect the safety, rights, or property of the public, our users, or the Operator.
Services your browser contacts
Like most websites, some pieces load from third parties, which by nature receive your IP address and basic request data when your browser fetches them: map tiles from OpenStreetMap, the mapping library from its CDN (unpkg), and web fonts from Google Fonts. These providers have their own privacy practices. News headlines shown on the Site are fetched by our server, not your browser.
Please protect others’ privacy
Because reports and comments are public, do not submit another person’s private health information, name a specific sick individual, or post an exact address, unless you have that person’s (or their guardian’s) consent. Report your own experience, or keep it general.
Email and unsubscribing
If you sign up for updates, every email includes a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. You can also email us to be removed.
Your choices and California rights
You can ask us to tell you what information we hold about you, to correct it, or to delete it, by emailing admin@laderahealthmap.com. California residents have rights under the CCPA/CPRA, including the right to know, delete, and correct, and the right to opt out of the “sale” or “sharing” of personal information — we do not sell or share it in that sense. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.
Children
The Site is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal information, email us and we will remove it.
Data retention and security
We keep submissions until you ask us to remove them or we remove them through moderation. The underlying database is not directly accessible from the web. We take reasonable measures to protect the information we hold, but no method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.
Changes and contact
We may update this Privacy Policy; the “Last updated” date above will reflect changes. Questions or requests: admin@laderahealthmap.com.
